How to Keep a House Clean With Kids

housekeeping vs house cleaning DC

The most reliable way to keep a house clean with kids is to stop chasing a spotless home every day and split the work into three layers: a short daily reset the kids help with, a weekly routine for laundry and quick wipe-downs, and a recurring professional clean for the floors, bathrooms and kitchen that busy parents can’t keep up with. For most families, a weekly or biweekly professional visit is what makes the other two layers manageable.

This guide covers where a home with kids gets dirty fastest, a routine that actually holds up, how to fit professional cleaning around school and nap schedules in Washington, DC and Montgomery County, and what to check before anyone you hire works in a home where your children live.

Where a home with kids gets dirty fastest

Kids don’t make every room dirty at the same rate. The mess concentrates in a handful of zones, and knowing which ones lets you focus your time instead of cleaning everything a little.

  • Kitchen and eating areas. Sticky tables and chairs, crumbs under the high chair, fingerprints on cabinet fronts and the refrigerator handle.
  • Floors. Young children spend much of their day on the floor, which is also where spills, crumbs and tracked-in dirt end up.
  • Bathrooms. Toothpaste on the mirror and faucet, water on the floor after bath time, and a sink that gets used far more than in an adults-only home.
  • Entryways and stairs. Shoes, backpacks and whatever comes in on them. In the DC area that means spring tree pollen, fall leaves and, later in the year, road salt and slush from the sidewalk. In a multi-level rowhouse, the stairs and handrails kids run up and down all day become some of the most-touched surfaces in the house.
  • Anything at kid height. Lower walls, doors, door frames and light switch plates collect handprints long before anything at adult eye level does.

A cleaning routine that holds up with kids

The routines that fail are the ones that depend on a big weekend clean. A family schedule breaks that plan within a few weeks. What works is matching each task to how often it actually needs doing, and to who can realistically do it.

How often  What gets done  Who does it
Every day (10–15 min)  Toys back into bins, dishes away, table and counters wiped, a quick sweep under the table  Everyone, kids included
Weekly  Laundry, trash and recycling, a quick bathroom wipe-down between cleans  Parents, with older kids helping
Weekly or every 2 weeks  Full clean: dusting, vacuuming and mopping, bathrooms sanitized, kitchen surfaces, stovetop and inside the microwave  Professional recurring clean
A few times a year  Deep reset: hand-washed baseboards, doors and switch plates, detailed kitchen including stovetop grates and the top of the fridge  Professional deep clean

The daily reset is where kids help the most. A toddler can drop toys into a bin, school-age kids can make their bed, wipe the table and put shoes away, and older kids can own their room. The goal isn’t a perfect job, it’s a habit. It also keeps the professional visit focused on cleaning instead of picking up.

When it makes sense to bring in professional help

Most parents don’t decide to hire a cleaner because the house is dirty. They decide because every weekend is going to catching up, a new baby has arrived, or both parents are working and the gap between “tidy” and “clean” keeps growing. Daily habits keep clutter under control. They don’t sanitize bathrooms or get the film off the kitchen floor.

The setup that works best for most families is to start with a deep clean that resets the buildup, then move to recurring cleaning weekly or every two weeks. Once the home hits a clean baseline, each recurring visit is faster and the daily reset is enough to hold it. That consistency is a big part of why 95% of our clients hire us again across the 500+ homes we’ve cleaned.

We work with families in Washington, DC, Bethesda, Rockville and Silver Spring.

How to fit cleaning around school, naps and pickup

Timing is what makes or breaks professional cleaning for a family. A few details from how we actually run visits:

You don’t need to be home

Most of our clients aren’t home during the clean. Many use a lockbox or give us a key and alarm code, and every key we hold is individually coded. That means you can book the visit during a DCPS or MCPS school day and come home to a clean house after pickup.

Plan around the arrival window

Our visits start as early as 8 a.m., with the last start no later than 4 p.m., and we give you a one-hour arrival window. If you need the team in and out before a specific time, like an early school pickup, ask for the first appointment of the day.

If you’re home during the visit

Plenty of parents work from home, sometimes with a baby or toddler in the next room. Tell the office ahead of time how you want the visit to go, for example skipping the nursery during nap time or leaving a half-built block tower exactly where it is. We add those notes to the team’s work order, and the team stays in touch with the office by phone throughout the day, so you can relay a change while they’re working.

“We have had an awesome experience with them. My wife and I both work from home, which can make having cleaners come through challenging. They are quick, thorough, and respectful of our schedules and space!”

What to check before anyone cleans a home where your kids live

Every company says its cleaners are trustworthy. These are the questions that separate the ones that can back it up.

Are the cleaners employees or independent contractors?

It changes who is responsible for the person in your home. Our cleaners are trained employees, not contractors, so the company carries that responsibility on every visit. If you’re weighing the options, our guide to a cleaning company vs. an independent cleaner walks through the trade-offs.

Will you know who is in your home?

Ask whether cleaners are background-checked and how they’re identified. Ours are background-checked and arrive uniformed and clearly identified, so you, and your kids, always know exactly who is working in the house and who they work for.

Who decides what products are used?

If your kids crawl on the floor or you prefer fragrance-free or eco-friendly products, this matters. Our team brings all the supplies for the first two cleanings. After that you receive a list and can buy the products you prefer, and we can use eco-friendly, non-toxic products on request.

What happens if something goes wrong?

With kids’ things everywhere, ask before you book. If you’re not happy with a clean, let us know within 24 hours and we’ll send a team back to make it right, at no additional cost. If something is damaged during a visit, report it to the office within 24 hours. We review each case individually and look for a fair solution, which can include repair or replacement when appropriate, with used items assessed on age and condition under our Terms & Conditions.

The night before: a 10-minute prep checklist

  1. Toys into bins and off the floor, so the team spends its time cleaning floors instead of clearing them.
  2. Put away anything fragile or unfinished, like drying art projects, puzzles and building sets.
  3. Clear the kitchen counters and table of school papers, lunchboxes and bottles.
  4. Leave a clean set of sheets out if you want the beds changed.
  5. Tell us about off-limits rooms or special requests in advance, so they’re on the work order.
  6. Confirm access: the lockbox code, key and alarm details you’ve arranged with the office.

Frequently asked questions

How do you keep a house clean with kids?

Split the work into layers instead of chasing a spotless home every day: a 10 to 15 minute daily reset that kids help with, a weekly routine for laundry and quick wipe-downs, and a weekly or biweekly professional clean for floors, bathrooms and the kitchen. An occasional deep clean resets the buildup that daily habits miss.

How often should a family with kids get a professional house cleaning?

Most busy families do best with a weekly or biweekly recurring clean. Weekly suits homes with young children, pets or heavy daily traffic, while biweekly works when the family keeps up a short daily reset. Starting with a deep clean sets a clean baseline so each recurring visit goes faster.

Do I need to be home while my house is being cleaned?

No. Most of our clients aren’t home during the clean. Many use a lockbox or give us a key and alarm code, and every key we hold is individually coded. You can schedule the visit during the school day and come home to a clean house.

Are house cleaning products safe around kids?

That depends on the products, which is why you should know what’s being used. Our team brings all supplies for the first two cleanings, then you receive a list and can buy the products you prefer, and we can use eco-friendly, non-toxic products on request. Keep young children off freshly mopped floors until they dry.

Is it safe to have a house cleaner in a home with children?

It is when you know who is coming. Ask whether the cleaners are employees or independent contractors, whether they’re background-checked, and whether the company is insured and bonded. Our cleaners are background-checked employees, not contractors, and they arrive uniformed and clearly identified.

What should I do before the cleaners arrive?

Spend 10 minutes the night before putting toys in bins, clearing the counters and table, and putting away fragile or unfinished projects. Let the office know about off-limits rooms, like a nursery during nap time, so it goes on the team’s work order.

They are AMAZING! I am going through cancer treatment and have been too debilitated by chemo to do much of anything around my home, which was stressing me out. The cancer center recommended Cris' Cleaning Squad because they generously offered FREE cleanings for people going through chemo/radiation. Carolina came in and spent hours making my home *sparkle*. Even mopped under my bed! It really helped my mental well-being and I'm no longer embarrassed to have visitors. I am so thankful for them and highly recommend their services :)
